In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the main importer of oriented strandboard (OSB) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X cubic meters, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Cambodia (14%), Vietnam (9.8%) and the Philippines (7.6%). Singapore (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to oriented strandboard (OSB) imports into Thailand stood at +24.4%. At the same time, Cambodia (+41.0%), Malaysia (+8.4%), the Philippines (+8.4%) and Singapore (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +41.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+27 p.p.), Cambodia (+12 p.p.) and the Philippines (+7.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -7% and -24.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oriented strandboard (OSB) in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 14% share.

In Thailand, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports increased at an average annual rate of +21.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+3.9% per year) and Malaysia (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per cubic meter), while Singapore ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
