Malaysia was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 75% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Singapore (8.4%). Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +38.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+48.5%), Singapore (+6.1%) and Thailand (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +48.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Malaysia (+55 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-16.4 p.p.) and Thailand (-41.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest cyclic hydrocarbons supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 13% share.

In Malaysia, cyclic hydrocarbons exports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+4.4% per year) and Thailand (-5.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of other cyclic hydrocarbons increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented roughly 60% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together achieving a 28% share of total imports. The following importers - Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +10.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
