In 2022, the amount of oxirane (ethylene oxide) exported in South-Eastern Asia reduced rapidly to X tons, waning by -25.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 158%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene oxide exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 124% against the previous year. Exports by Country

Malaysia was the largest exporter of oxirane (ethylene oxide) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Cambodia (5.8%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (+50.8%), Thailand (+8.3%) and Singapore (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +50.8% from 2012-2022. Thailand (+7.9 p.p.) and Cambodia (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -14.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest ethylene oxide supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports. Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2.3%.

Among the main exporting countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +35.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the fourth consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of oxirane (ethylene oxide), which increased by 13% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.2% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, ethylene oxide imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of oxirane (ethylene oxide), namely Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), constituting a 5% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +44.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 78% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +52.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
