Papaya Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Southeast Asian papaya market, when its value decreased by -2.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Papaya Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, papaya production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of papaya production was Indonesia (X tons), accounting for 67% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Philippines (X tons), sevenfold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Indonesia amounted to +1.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the Philippines (-0.0% per year) and Thailand (-2.4% per year).

The average papaya yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, shrinking by -2.1% compared with 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by 7.1%. Over the period under review, the papaya yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of papayas production in South-Eastern Asia declined to X ha, shrinking by -2.4% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.1%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of papayas was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Malaysia represented the largest exporter of papayas in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 67% of total exports in 2022. The Philippines (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total exports.

Exports from Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+15.1%) and the Philippines (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Philippines (+10 p.p.) and Thailand (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-18 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest papaya supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were the Philippines ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 98% of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +18.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, papaya export price increased by +72.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of papayas decreased by -1.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, papaya imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Brunei Darussalam (X tons), mixing up a 6.9% share of total imports.

Imports into Singapore decreased at an average annual rate of -4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Brunei Darussalam (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore totaled +1.5%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam amounted to $X per ton.
