Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, paper knife exports in South-Eastern Asia declined rapidly to X units, reducing by -31.4% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 75%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, paper knife exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Vietnam (X units) was the main exporter of paper knives, mixing up 61% of total exports. Thailand (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Malaysia (15%) and Singapore (8%).
Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paper knives exports, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Singapore (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+57 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -11.1% and -42.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest paper knife supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.1% share.
In Vietnam, paper knife exports increased at an average annual rate of +49.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+6.4% per year) and Singapore (+5.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 37% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of paper knives increased by 46% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper knife imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Indonesia was the main importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 51% of total imports. Vietnam (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X units), Myanmar (X units) and Malaysia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. Singapore (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+42.5%), Vietnam (+5.6%) and Malaysia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +42.5% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+10 p.p.) and Indonesia (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.2% and -9.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 84% of total imports.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +17.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Myanmar (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
