Pear Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian pear market rose slightly to $X in 2021, picking up by 4.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, posted a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Pear Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, pear production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Cambodia (X kg) remains the largest pear producing country in South-Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Cambodia totaled +1.3%.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of pears, when their volume increased by 84% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a measured increase. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented roughly 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +31.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +29.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -16.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

Pear imports dropped slightly to X tons in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, pear imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Indonesia was the main importer of pears in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (9.9%), Malaysia (8.9%) and Vietnam (5.1%). Singapore (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pear imports into Indonesia stood at +6.3%. At the same time, the Philippines (+8.7%) and Thailand (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.3%), Singapore (-3.6%) and Vietnam (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+13 p.p.), the Philippines (+9.9 p.p.) and Thailand (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -5.6% and -20% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pears in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia amounted to +13.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+11.2% per year) and the Philippines (+22.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Indonesia ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
