Dry Peas Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, the Southeast Asian dry peas market decreased by -4.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In 2021, approx. X tons of peas (dry) were exported in South-Eastern Asia; dropping by -2.5% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 259% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, dry peas exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 374% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Myanmar prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas imports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +22.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) represented the key importer of peas (dry), creating 47% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (9.2%) and Indonesia (8.4%). The following importers - Vietnam (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) - each recorded an 8.2% share of total imports.
