Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of persimmons increased by 161% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, persimmon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) was the largest exporter of persimmons, mixing up 45% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (11%), Malaysia (8.2%) and Vietnam (7%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.2% share.
In Singapore, persimmon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lao People's Democratic Republic (0.0% per year) and Vietnam (-7.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -41.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Persimmon Imports
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of persimmons decreased by -33.9% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, persimmon imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Vietnam was the key importer of persimmons in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 76% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together took near 20% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the persimmons imports, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-4.2%) and Malaysia (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+30 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -9.2% and -16.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled +25.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+13.0% per year) and Malaysia (-4.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -14.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
