Pineapple Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian pineapple market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The average pineapple yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -3.1% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 6.7%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of pineapples were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 96%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Philippines dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) took a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.2%). Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple exports from the Philippines stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Indonesia (+55.1%) and Thailand (+27.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+8.6 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Philippines (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Philippines amounted to +12.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+26.1% per year) and Malaysia (-4.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 14%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Singapore (X tons) represented the largest importer of pineapples, constituting 72% of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.6%).

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pineapples. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+26.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brunei Darussalam increased by +18 percentage points.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pineapples in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
