Pistachio Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian pistachio market increased by 18% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Pistachio Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, pistachio production declined dramatically to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 45,598%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pistachio production, accounting for 99% of total volume.

In Thailand, pistachio production plunged by an average annual rate of -37.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

Pistachio Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of pistachios decreased by -70.4% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, exports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 210%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 177% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), committing a 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.3% share of total exports.

Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pistachios. At the same time, Thailand (+36.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +36.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-5.3%) and Malaysia (-19.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+15 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-7 p.p.) and Malaysia (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest pistachio supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 2.2% share.

In Vietnam, pistachio exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (-2.5% per year) and Thailand (+43.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +108.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 86%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pistachio Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pistachios increased by 9.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.8% share, followed by Singapore (5.2%). Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -9.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+11.5%) and Singapore (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+8.4 p.p.) and Singapore (+4.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 5% share.

In Vietnam, pistachio imports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+8.4% per year) and Singapore (+4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio import price increased by +79.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 55%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Malaysia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
