From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled +16.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-5.9% per year) and Singapore (-21.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) represented the major importer of planes, chisels and gouges for working wood, constituting 42% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Malaysia (12%), Vietnam (8.2%), Thailand (7.8%) and Myanmar (7.3%). Imports into Indonesia decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+7.8%), the Philippines (+2.7%) and Malaysia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2022. Singapore and Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+4.7 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.6 p.p.) and Malaysia (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-14.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest gouges and chisels importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 69% of total imports.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +4.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade.
