In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Southeast Asian plastic container market, when its value decreased by -2.7% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, plastic container exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Malaysia represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together mixing up a 45% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic container exports from Malaysia stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Indonesia (+15.2%), Singapore (+10.8%) and Thailand (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+6.3 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.6 p.p.) and Thailand (+5.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-5.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest plastic container supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 85% share of total exports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, plastic container imports in South-Eastern Asia totaled X tons, with an increase of 1.6% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +89.2% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 22%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The countries with the highest levels of plastic container imports in 2021 were Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together amounting to 92% of total import. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic container importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
