Non-cellular polyethylene film exports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 6.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +59.9% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 10%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Malaysia represented the key exporter of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held near 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-cellular polyethylene film exports from Malaysia stood at +4.8%. At the same time, the Philippines (+52.4%), Vietnam (+22.6%), Indonesia (+5.3%) and Thailand (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polyethylene film supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 10% share.

In Malaysia, non-cellular polyethylene film exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+2.7% per year) and Vietnam (+17.9% per year).

For the tenth consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, which increased by 0.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) was the main importer of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in South-Eastern Asia, mixing up 97% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +33.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
