In value terms, polycarbonate production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of polycarbonates (in primary forms) increased by 1.2% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 8.8%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polycarbonate exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the largest exporter of polycarbonates (in primary forms) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. Singapore (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (9%). The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total exports.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of polycarbonates (in primary forms). At the same time, Vietnam (+69.4%), Indonesia (+45.7%) and Malaysia (+27.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +69.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+8.3 p.p.), Thailand (+7.4 p.p.), Vietnam (+3.3 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -22.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest polycarbonate supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand totaled +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (-6.6% per year) and Malaysia (+19.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

Polycarbonate imports contracted to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -9.1% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 22%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polycarbonate imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of polycarbonates (in primary forms), namely Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up an 8.3% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +17.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polycarbonate importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +21.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
