In 2021, the Southeast Asian porous-tipped pen market decreased by -14.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of porous-tipped pens and markers, when their volume increased by 30% to X units. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, porous-tipped pen exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 92% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of porous-tipped pens and markers, when their volume increased by 4.3% to X units. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, porous-tipped pen imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) were the key importers of porous-tipped pens and markers in 2021, finishing at approx. 29% and 25% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), Vietnam (X units), Malaysia (X units) and the Philippines (X units), together mixing up a 40% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +46.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
