Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of potatoes, namely Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Singapore (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.9% share, followed by Thailand (7.8%). Myanmar (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Vietnam (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest potato supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 71% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 13%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of potatoes imported in South-Eastern Asia surged to X tons, with an increase of 31% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the largest importers of potatoes in South-Eastern Asia, together finishing at approx. 62% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (9%), Singapore (7%) and the Philippines (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Philippines (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potatoes in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam stood at +14.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-2.8% per year) and Thailand (+3.8% per year).

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
