Indonesia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of potato production, accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, potato production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Myanmar (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Indonesia stood at +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Myanmar (-1.4% per year) and Vietnam (-2.8% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of potatoes in South-Eastern Asia shrank slightly to X tons per ha, flattening at 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the potato yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of potatoes production in South-Eastern Asia expanded modestly to X ha, picking up by 2.3% compared with 2020 figures. In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of potatoes, when their volume increased by 28% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of potatoes, namely Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Singapore (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.9% share, followed by Thailand (7.8%). Myanmar (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

In value terms, the largest potato supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 71% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of potatoes imported in South-Eastern Asia surged to X tons, with an increase of 31% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the largest importers of potatoes in South-Eastern Asia, together finishing at approx. 62% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (9%), Singapore (7%) and the Philippines (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Philippines (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potatoes in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 11% share.
