Canned Food Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian canned food market rose slightly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -2.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of canned food was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned food exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 4.5%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the main exporter of canned food in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2021. The Philippines (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of canned food. At the same time, Indonesia (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012-2021. Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-3.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-0.9% per year) and the Philippines (+4.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 9%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Indonesia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took near 13% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 60% share of total imports. The Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Among the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
