Quicklime Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian quicklime market rose sharply to $X in 2022, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, quicklime production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 5.8%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of quicklime exported in South-Eastern Asia reduced modestly to X tons, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quicklime exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of quicklime, namely Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +9.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 29%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Quicklime Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of quicklime increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quicklime imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) was the main importer of quicklime, making up 70% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to quicklime imports into Indonesia stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Cambodia (+31.8%), Malaysia (+4.7%) and the Philippines (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +31.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (-4.7%) and Singapore (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+40 p.p.) and Cambodia (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Philippines, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Singapore saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -6.7% and -33.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quicklime in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.5% share.

In Indonesia, quicklime imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (+3.4% per year) and Singapore (-11.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
