Lime Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, the Southeast Asian lime market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime, when their volume increased by 8.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 15%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lime exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +5.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total exports. Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2.2%.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +6.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime increased by 7% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lime imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) was the major importer of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime, creating 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together generating a 45% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

These countries were followed by Malaysia, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 7%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
