Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of quinoa, when their volume increased by 13% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 930% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, quinoa exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,211% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Singapore (X tons) was the largest exporter of quinoa, generating 73% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Thailand (11%).

Exports from Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +55.1% from 2013 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+58.4%) and Malaysia (+31.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +58.4% from 2013-2021. Singapore (+18 p.p.) and Thailand (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -29.4% from 2013 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest quinoa supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at +55.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+36.7% per year) and Thailand (+31.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -12.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Quinoa Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of quinoa decreased by -22% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,021%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, quinoa imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 632% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of quinoa, namely Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The Philippines (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took near 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +99.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +77.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Singapore ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
