The global number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production declined to X heads in 2021, waning by -14.9% compared with the year before. Overall, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 91%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Vietnam represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 54% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total exports. The following exporters - Myanmar (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total exports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw hides and skins of cattle exports, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+12.1%), Brunei Darussalam (+11.9%) and Thailand (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-7.3%) and Myanmar (-23.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+39 p.p.), Thailand (+6.8 p.p.), Cambodia (+4.7 p.p.) and Brunei Darussalam (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia and Myanmar saw its share reduced by -14.2% and -33.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 89% of total exports. These countries were followed by Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei Darussalam, which together accounted for a further 8.9%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -16.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand represented the main importer of raw hides and skins of cattle in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) held a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (6.2%) and Cambodia (5%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cattle hide and skin imports into Thailand stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Cambodia (+30.1%) and Indonesia (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2021. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand amounted to -9.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+14.6% per year) and Vietnam (-24.4% per year).
