In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the Southeast Asian ball pen refill market, when its value decreased by -4.8% to $X. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a significant increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+19.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-2.1%) and Singapore (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+37 p.p.) and Vietnam (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -27.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 97% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, which accounted for a further 1.3%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +29.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 69% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Vietnam (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ball pen refill imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
