Paddy Rice Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
The Southeast Asian paddy rice market declined modestly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Paddy Rice Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, paddy rice production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 99% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), with a combined 67% share of total production. Myanmar, the Philippines, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +2.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average paddy rice yield declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the paddy rice yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of paddy rice production in South-Eastern Asia dropped to X ha, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 2.1%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to paddy rice production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Paddy Rice Exports
Exports in South-Eastern Asia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of paddy rice decreased by -6.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 296%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, paddy rice exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 191% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) represented the largest exporter of paddy rice, creating 65% of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Vietnam (5%).
Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paddy rice exports, with a CAGR of +81.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Lao People's Democratic Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Myanmar (+64 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Lao People's Democratic Republic (-63.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X), Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 88% of total exports.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +64.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Paddy Rice Imports
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of paddy rice, when their volume decreased by -13.8% to X tons. In general, imports showed a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paddy rice imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Vietnam was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), committing a 37% share of total imports. Timor-Leste (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Timor-Leste (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paddy rice in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Philippines stood at +16.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-7.1% per year) and Timor-Leste (+14.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10% against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 72%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
