The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mill rolling roll imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Thailand was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), Indonesia (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together mixing up a 40% share of total imports. Myanmar (X units), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X units) and the Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +84.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total imports. Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.6%.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +69.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
