Rye Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, the Southeast Asian rye market decreased by -49% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Rye Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, rye production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 79%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of rye production, accounting for 77% of total volume. Moreover, rye production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with a 3.3% share.

In Vietnam, rye production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+169.6% per year) and Malaysia (-12.5% per year).

Rye Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of rye, when their volume increased by 8.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 936% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rye exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 291% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore represented the major exporter of rye in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), constituting a 28% share of total exports. Indonesia (X kg) held a little share of total exports.

Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rye exports, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012 to 2022. Singapore, with a CAGR of +26.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 128% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 134% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, rye imports in South-Eastern Asia contracted significantly to X tons, which is down by -39.4% against 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 532% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rye imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a precipitous decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 632% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together creating a 24% share of total imports. Singapore (X kg) took a minor share of total imports.

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -25.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 120%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
