The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sesame oil exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Singapore represented the main exporter of sesame oil in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took near 55% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest sesame oil supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at +3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+6.3% per year) and Vietnam (+3.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 9.5%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of sesame oil, which increased by 3.7% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +114.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sesame oil imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of sesame oil, namely Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Malaysia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took near 25% share of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 72% share of total imports.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +22.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
