For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of sheets, panels and tiles of cellulose fibrecement, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 50%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cellulose fibrecement sheet exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the major exporter of sheets, panels and tiles of cellulose fibrecement in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together mixing up a 19% share of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+37.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +37.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+37 p.p.) and Indonesia (+7.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-45.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest cellulose fibrecement sheet supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +17.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-6.9% per year) and Indonesia (+35.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 9.7%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (-1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

Cellulose fibrecement sheet imports soared to X tons in 2022, rising by 23% on the previous year. In general, imports showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cellulose fibrecement sheet imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Philippines dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held near 9.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Malaysia (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - each resulted at a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cellulose fibrecement sheet imports into the Philippines stood at +15.5%. At the same time, Myanmar (+40.1%), Cambodia (+5.2%), Indonesia (+3.7%), Malaysia (+3.0%) and Vietnam (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +40.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+73 p.p.) and Myanmar (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Lao People's Democratic Republic saw its share reduced by -4.2%, -6.5%, -7.1%, -8.1% and -49.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheets, panels and tiles of cellulose fibrecement in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Philippines amounted to +18.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+8.9% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-9.3% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
