Silk Yarn Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the Southeast Asian silk yarn market, when its value decreased by -0.7% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Silk Yarn Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, silk yarn production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -1.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Silk Yarn Exports
Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, shipments abroad of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk yarn exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam was the largest exporter of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 23% share of total exports.
Exports from Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -6.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +2.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand increased by +12 percentage points.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest silk yarn supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
In Vietnam, silk yarn exports declined by an average annual rate of -7.6% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+0.3%).

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, purchases abroad of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, silk yarn imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 27%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the five major importers of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, namely Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Lao People's Democratic Republic, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), mixing up a 5.1% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam stood at +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-10.5% per year) and Indonesia (-14.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
