The Southeast Asian unwrought silver market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, overseas shipments of silver, unwrought or in powder form decreased by -19.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after seven years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unwrought silver exports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together comprising 82% of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (5.5%). Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +40.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 91% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +37.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per kg, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 113%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of silver, unwrought or in powder form increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unwrought silver imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 9.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
