In 2021, the Southeast Asian sheepskin and lambskin market decreased by -3.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a tangible increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of sheepskin and lambskin production was Indonesia (X tons), comprising approx. 90% of total volume. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malaysia (X tons), more than tenfold. Myanmar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Indonesia totaled +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+5.9% per year) and Myanmar (-13.9% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in South-Eastern Asia skyrocketed to X kg per head, growing by 23% compared with 2020. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the sheepskin and lambskin yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.

The global number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production plummeted to X heads in 2021, reducing by -16.1% on the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the number of producing animals attained the peak level of X heads. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of this number failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) decreased by -30.9% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Myanmar represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), mixing up a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 6.7% of total exports.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Lao People's Democratic Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.6%) and Thailand (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Myanmar and Malaysia increased by +47 and +6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total exports. Indonesia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Among the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of -0.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 50% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) decreased by -41.3% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 42%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the key importers of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), together generating 95% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 3.1% share.
