Slate Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in the Southeast Asian slate market, when its value decreased by -14.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed significant growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, slate production fell remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 62%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of slate decreased by -21.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 235% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slate exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), comprising a 6% share of total exports.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the slate exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2021. Vietnam (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+41 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -31.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest slate supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia stood at +8.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 81%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam stood at $X per ton.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of slate, when their volume increased by 40% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, slate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 65%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Malaysia represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 48% of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Vietnam (12%), Singapore (7.8%) and the Philippines (6.9%). The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cambodia (-3.6%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (-4.6%), Singapore (-6.1%), Vietnam (-21.6%) and Indonesia (-25.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines, Singapore and Cambodia increased by +20, +5.7, +5.6, +2.8 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported slate in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia amounted to -1.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-23.2% per year) and Singapore (-6.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 45%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
