The Southeast Asian drawing board market declined slightly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fifth consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, which decreased by -17.3% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 288%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, drawing board exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 222% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 59% of total exports. Vietnam (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X units) and Singapore (X units). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total exports. The Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +66.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+141.5%) and Vietnam (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +141.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-13.9%) and Singapore (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+58 p.p.), Vietnam (+10 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-25 p.p.) and Malaysia (-30.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest drawing board supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 88% share of total exports. Singapore and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.8%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +157.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 28%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, which increased by 1.9% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
