In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Southeast Asian sleeping bag market, when its value decreased by -14% to $X. The total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sleeping bag exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Vietnam represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which reached 70% of total exports. Cambodia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Myanmar (12%). Thailand (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sleeping bag exports from Vietnam stood at +43.0%. At the same time, Myanmar (+175.9%) and Cambodia (+42.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +175.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+36 p.p.), Myanmar (+12 p.p.) and Cambodia (+7.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -34.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest sleeping bag supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +42.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+57.9% per year) and Myanmar (+158.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per unit), while Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of sleeping bags decreased by -12% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, imports saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sleeping bag imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Thailand represented the major importer of sleeping bags in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by the Philippines (12%), Singapore (9.4%) and Cambodia (6%). Indonesia (X units) and Vietnam (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sleeping bags. At the same time, Cambodia (+38.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +38.5% from 2012-2021. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.8%), Singapore (-4.3%), the Philippines (-6.7%) and Malaysia (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+13 p.p.) and Cambodia (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Philippines (-4.1 p.p.) and Malaysia (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sleeping bag importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Cambodia ($X), together accounting for 67% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +39.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
