In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 264% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, snail exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 136%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the key exporter of snails (except sea snails) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), achieving a 21% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Indonesia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+95.4%) and Vietnam (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +95.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Myanmar (-9.7%) and Thailand (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia increased by +20, +15 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest snail supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 4.9% share.

In Indonesia, snail exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+12.8% per year) and Myanmar (-4.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of snails (except sea snails), when their volume decreased by -28.1% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,440%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, snail imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 517%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Malaysia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 90% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 4.4% of total imports.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the snails (except sea snails) imports, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. Vietnam (-1.2%), Indonesia (-8.9%) and Myanmar (-26.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+51 p.p.), Myanmar (+2.5 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia saw its share reduced by -2.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported snails (except sea snails) in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+9.1% per year) and Vietnam (+3.5% per year).
