Sorghum Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Southeast Asian sorghum market, when its value decreased by -8.5% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Sorghum Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, sorghum production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 60%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Myanmar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sorghum production, accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, sorghum production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar was relatively modest.
In 2022, the average yield of sorghum in South-Eastern Asia fell to X tons per ha, waning by -1.6% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the sorghum yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the sorghum harvested area in South-Eastern Asia reduced to X ha, which is down by -6.3% against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia
For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of sorghum, which increased by 3.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 568%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, sorghum exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 519%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) was the main exporter of sorghum, creating 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), creating a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sorghum exports from Myanmar stood at +23.6%. At the same time, Thailand (+180.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +180.0% from 2012-2022. Myanmar (+82 p.p.) and Thailand (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest sorghum supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
In Myanmar, sorghum exports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.8% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while Thailand totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+3.8%).

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, imports of sorghum in South-Eastern Asia was estimated at X tons, picking up by 14% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sorghum imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 110%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Philippines prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sorghum imports, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Philippines (+44 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorghum in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports.
In the Philippines, sorghum imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -5.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the Philippines stood at $X per ton.
