Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest spinach producing country in South-Eastern Asia, accounting for 68% of total volume. Moreover, spinach production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malaysia (X tons), twofold.

In 2022, the average yield of spinach in South-Eastern Asia rose modestly to X tons per ha, surging by 2.1% on 2021 figures. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 15%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas purchases of spinach decreased by -5.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together mixing up a 17% share of total imports.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of spinach. At the same time, Malaysia (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand and Singapore saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -2.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spinach in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore amounted to +4.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+15.7% per year) and Thailand (+6.6% per year).
