In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of straight saw blades for working metal, when their volume increased by 145% to X tons. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, straight saw blade exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced decline. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the largest exporter of straight saw blades for working metal in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Vietnam (15%) and Malaysia (6.7%).
Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+69.3%) and Malaysia (+29.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +69.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+15 p.p.), Vietnam (+15 p.p.) and Malaysia (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -36.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 87% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +76.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
Straight saw blade imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 29% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, straight saw blade imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main importer of straight saw blades for working metal, making up 44% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (18%) and Singapore (14%). Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of straight saw blades for working metal. At the same time, Indonesia (+13.3%) and Malaysia (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-7.6%) and Singapore (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+14 p.p.), Malaysia (+7 p.p.) and Thailand (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-3 p.p.) and Singapore (-24.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest straight saw blade importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +16.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
