The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the strawberry yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of strawberries production in South-Eastern Asia reduced rapidly to X ha, with a decrease of -15.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

For the sixth consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of strawberries, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 46%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, strawberry exports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 49%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Singapore prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by Thailand (5.8%). Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to strawberry exports from Singapore stood at +15.8%. At the same time, Malaysia (+24.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-10.8%) and Indonesia (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+50 p.p.) and Malaysia (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -26.5% and -29.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest strawberry supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore stood at +12.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+44.7% per year) and Thailand (-0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -21.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry export price decreased by -24.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+16.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Strawberry Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of strawberries imported in South-Eastern Asia reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -3.1% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Singapore (X tons), distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main importers of strawberries, together generating 97% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest strawberry importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports. Vietnam and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Among the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +26.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
