Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, approx. X units of t-shirts were exported in South-Eastern Asia; reducing by -30.1% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 278%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, t-shirt exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam was the major exporter of t-shirts in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 43% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Cambodia (18%), Indonesia (6.7%) and Malaysia (5%). Myanmar (X units) and Singapore (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to t-shirt exports from Vietnam stood at +15.0%. At the same time, Myanmar (+42.6%), Thailand (+15.5%), Malaysia (+14.1%), Cambodia (+12.9%), Singapore (+10.3%) and Indonesia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +42.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar increased by +7.2, +3.7 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest t-shirt supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 10% share.
In Vietnam, t-shirt exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+4.2% per year) and Indonesia (-3.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 42% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (-6.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of t-shirts decreased by -1.4% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -37.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, t-shirt imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Malaysia (X units), Singapore (X units), Indonesia (X units), Thailand (X units) and Vietnam (X units) represented roughly 92% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X units), generating a 5.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest t-shirt importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports. Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
