The Southeast Asian table linen market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of table linen, knitted or crocheted decreased by -32.2% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, table linen exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cambodia was the largest exporter of table linen, knitted or crocheted in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 51% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Malaysia (11%), Indonesia (10%) and Thailand (9.4%). Singapore (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Cambodia decreased at an average annual rate of -16.7% from 2012 to 2022. Vietnam (-4.3%), Indonesia (-6.8%), Singapore (-10.6%), Thailand (-13.8%) and Malaysia (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+11 p.p.) and Indonesia (+6.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cambodia (-12 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest table linen supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Cambodia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 81% share of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of -2.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Table linen imports amounted to X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 76%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, table linen imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +43.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 34%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Malaysia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 53% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Thailand (12%), Indonesia (8.1%) and Cambodia (5%). The following importers - the Philippines (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to table linen imports into Malaysia stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Cambodia (+27.2%) and Indonesia (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.0%), Singapore (-2.4%) and the Philippines (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+28 p.p.), Cambodia (+4.4 p.p.) and Indonesia (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -5.3%, -10.2% and -17.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest table linen importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 81% of total imports. The Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +20.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+33.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
