In 2021, the Southeast Asian talcum powder market decreased by -2.3% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a modest expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +107.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, talcum powder exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 40%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), creating an 8.7% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the talcum powder and other powders for cosmetic use exports, with a CAGR of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In 2021, supplies from abroad of talcum powder and other powders for cosmetic use decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, talcum powder imports fell to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -36.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together mixing up a 49% share of total imports.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the talcum powder and other powders for cosmetic use imports, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Thailand and Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.7%), Malaysia (-3.6%) and Indonesia (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+36 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -4.1%, -6.3%, -8% and -14.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 73% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +26.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
