After two years of growth, the Southeast Asian taro (cocoyam) market decreased by -0.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 118%. Over the period under review, the (cocoyam) exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 101%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -24.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 6.3%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of taro decreased by -1.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of (cocoyam) imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, (cocoyam) imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Malaysia was the major importer of taro in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 64% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), mixing up a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+55.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +55.0% from 2012-2022. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+29 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand and Singapore saw its share reduced by -4.7% and -28% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
