Indonesia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of tomato production, comprising approx. 67% of total volume. Moreover, tomato production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Philippines (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (X tons), with an 11% share.
In Indonesia, tomato production increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the Philippines (+0.9% per year) and Malaysia (+3.8% per year).
The average tomato yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the tomato yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in South-Eastern Asia; stabilizing at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of tomatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 10%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.
Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tomatoes. At the same time, Thailand (+10.9%) and Vietnam (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand increased by +2.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.
In Malaysia, tomato exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+3.2% per year) and Vietnam (+5.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 15%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, the amount of tomatoes imported in South-Eastern Asia dropped modestly to X tons, waning by -4% against 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, tomato imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Singapore dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Brunei Darussalam (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 18% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of tomatoes. At the same time, Vietnam (+33.0%), Brunei Darussalam (+20.8%) and Malaysia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Brunei Darussalam (+7.1 p.p.), Malaysia (+2.9 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Brunei Darussalam, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore totaled +2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+9.4% per year) and Brunei Darussalam (+13.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
