In 2021, the amount of uncooked pasta exported in South-Eastern Asia amounted to X tons, growing by 4.3% on the year before. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -11.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 27%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, uncooked pasta exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 13%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Thailand was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together mixing up a 39% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncooked pasta exports from Thailand stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Indonesia (+10.5%), Vietnam (+9.2%), Malaysia (+4.7%) and the Philippines (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Vietnam (+7.1 p.p.) and Indonesia (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-7.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest uncooked pasta supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +3.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+7.0% per year) and the Philippines (+7.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 17%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of uncooked pasta decreased by -2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +101.0% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, uncooked pasta imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.7% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) represented the largest importer of uncooked pasta, committing 38% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (17%), Thailand (7.8%), Cambodia (6.8%), Indonesia (4.8%) and Vietnam (4.5%).
Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+22.0%), Vietnam (+15.8%), Malaysia (+7.6%), Thailand (+5.5%) and Singapore (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2021. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the Philippines (+6.2 p.p.), Cambodia (+4.8 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Indonesia (-3.9 p.p.) and Singapore (-10.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were the Philippines ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 26%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +22.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
