As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Thailand prevails in exports structure, recording X cubic meters, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X cubic meters), making up a 6% share of total exports.

Waferboard imports soared to X cubic meters in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the year before. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.2% against 2018 indices. In 2021, Malaysia (X cubic meters) was the key importer of waferboards, creating 51% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X cubic meters), Indonesia (X cubic meters) and the Philippines (X cubic meters), together committing a 47% share of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+14.3%) and the Philippines (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+16 p.p.), Vietnam (+11 p.p.) and the Philippines (+8.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Indonesia (-35.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported waferboards in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 18% share.

In Malaysia, waferboard imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+10.8% per year) and the Philippines (+13.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per cubic meter), while Malaysia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
