The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Vietnam was the major exporter of wood chips and particles in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X cubic meters, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Indonesia (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total exports. Malaysia (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood chips and particles exports, with a CAGR of +7.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+7.0%), Indonesia (+6.6%) and Thailand (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Vietnam (+9.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7.4% share.
In Vietnam, wood chips and particles exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+1.7% per year) and Indonesia (+3.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 7.3%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while Indonesia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
Wood chips and particles imports fell to X cubic meters in 2022, which is down by -9.1% against the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 245%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Thailand represented the main importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which amounted to 64% of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Indonesia (X cubic meters) and Singapore (X cubic meters). All these countries together took near 32% share of total imports. Vietnam (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood chips and particles imports into Thailand stood at -10.1%. At the same time, Vietnam (+23.2%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012-2022. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lao People's Democratic Republic (+18 p.p.), Singapore (+2.6 p.p.), Indonesia (+2.5 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-26.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 4% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 3.2% share.
In Lao People's Democratic Republic, wood chips and particles imports increased at an average annual rate of +48.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-8.9% per year) and Indonesia (+7.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, surging by 132% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 268%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter.
