In 2021, the Southeast Asian cotton fabric market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of woven fabrics of cotton increased by 0.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 51% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (15%) and Malaysia (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest cotton fabric supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 20% share.

In Thailand, cotton fabric exports declined by an average annual rate of -5.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-6.3% per year) and Vietnam (+19.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of woven fabrics of cotton increased by 6.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton fabric imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons), together achieving a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Cambodia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +9.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
