In 2021, the Southeast Asian man-made filament yarn market increased by 8.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of man-made filament yarn increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented the key exporters of man-made filament yarn in 2021, accounting for near 44% and 31% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), mixing up a 20% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 39%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together achieving a 45% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the man-made filament yarn imports, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-3.9%) and the Philippines (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam increased by +34 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported man-made filament yarn in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam amounted to +9.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+4.1% per year) and Thailand (-2.3% per year).

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Cambodia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
