Woolen Yarn Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
The Southeast Asian woolen yarn market declined to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, woolen yarn production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.9%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of yarn of wool, when their volume increased by 47% to X tons. In general, exports saw notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, woolen yarn exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 80%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented roughly 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), making up a 10% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 97% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +22.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Woolen Yarn Imports
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of yarn of wool decreased by -7.5% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, woolen yarn imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) represented the major importer of yarn of wool, achieving 56% of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held near 36% share of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to woolen yarn imports into Vietnam stood at +19.6%. At the same time, Cambodia (+20.7%) and Myanmar (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012-2021. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+34 p.p.) and Cambodia (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -15.7% and -18.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest woolen yarn importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Cambodia ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 93% of total imports. Myanmar and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.3%.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +32.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
