Market Size for Activated Natural Mineral Products in Southern Asia

After three years of decline, the South Asian activated natural mineral products market increased by 0.3% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Activated Natural Mineral Products in Southern Asia

In value terms, activated natural mineral products production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 46%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Bangladesh (X tons) represented the major importer of activated natural mineral products, comprising 63% of total imports. India (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nepal (6.8%). Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+28.2%) and Sri Lanka (+15.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bangladesh (+20 p.p.), Nepal (+5.5 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of India (-26.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Nepal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nepal, with a CAGR of +24.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 45%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
